$5,000 Donation to Support Teen’s Soccer Non-Profit, Pass It On

Lerner and Rowe Gives Back Partners with Pass It On

Lerner and Rowe Gives Back was presented with a unique partnership opportunity to support a local nonprofit, Pass It On, founded by Wade Crum, a 13-year-old soccer player. The nonprofit’s mission is to make it possible for every kid to get involved and play soccer, despite economic challenges.

One of the ways Pass It On does this is by collecting new and gently-used sports equipment and clothing for children in need.

Another way is through financial donations such as the $5,000 donation our foundation gave them to help cover costs to purchase more collection bins and other materials.

Passing It On, So Everyone Can Play

Pass It On started with Crum’s idea that his soccer clothing and equipment was worth something even if he couldn’t use it because he’d outgrown it. Furthermore, he thought that he should give the gear to other kids who could not afford to buy it so they too could enjoy the positive impacts of soccer. More specifically, for them to have the same opportunities he has to make new friends, learn the importance of teamwork, and the joy that comes from doing something you love.

Crum also knew there must be hundreds of kids like him in his soccer club with closets full of unused clothing and equipment, too.

Then, after it was discovered that there wasn’t an organization dedicated to accepting the donation of soccer clothing and equipment for kids in need, he asked his mom about starting a nonprofit to fill the gap.

Wade Crum’s parents and older brother couldn’t be more supportive of him and appreciative of the generosity from community organizations such as Lerner and Rowe Gives Back. His mother Sarah shared with us that Pass It On began with an idea from her son, but it has since grown from an idea into a network of people who all care about those in need and who are willing to do lend a helping hand.

Game Plan for Zero Waste

Soccer Nonprofit logoNot just satisfied with sharing resources and opening opportunities for others in need, Wade also wants to achieve zero waste of soccer clothing and equipment. He believes this can be accomplished by passing on all gear to another child who can use it.

$5,000 Donation to Help Fund WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks Program

Lerner and Rowe Gives Back Sponsors Meal Program
WeekEnd Hunger Backpack Program provides weekend meals for Phoenix students.

Lerner & Rowe Gives Back generously donated $5,000 to the Valley of the Sun United Way’s WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks program.

Through this essential program, Valley children, who normally rely on obtaining meals from breakfast and lunch school programs during the week, receive meals during the weekend too.

These weekend meals help to satisfy each child’s hunger so that come Monday, they arrive at school focused and ready to learn.

Stuffing 1,500 Backpacks to Help Combat Hunger

On March 20, 2019, our outreach volunteers will also team up with AltAZ 93.3 at their studio to help prepare 1,500 backpack meals.

Each meal is carefully packaged in a discreet plastic bag for a student to easily carry home in their backpack.

Program Goals & Requests for Help

Logo - Valley of the Sun United WayAccording to statistics shared by the Valley of the Sun United Way, many children who live among the 82,000 Valley households suffer chronic hunger. This hunger makes it difficult for a child to focus on school work or lessons in class, which in turn can negatively impact the rest of the entire learning environment.

Now, thanks to the efforts of the WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks program, growing children are given the chance to focus on their education and succeeding (not their empty stomach or where their next meal will come from).

However, the program needs the support of volunteers, schools, businesses, and community organizations, such as Lerner and Rowe Gives Back, to continue to thrive and succeed.

We ask that others join us in helping combat hunger among our Valley’s children. You can make a donation online on the Valley of the Sun United Way website and help provide much needed weekend meals for local youth!

Take a look at a few images of our group after packing food for local kids and a video recap of the event:

Following this amazing event, our team also attended a United Way luncheon to further their efforts to end children’s hunger in the schools. So, in addition to benefiting the WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks program, the Breakfast in the Classrooms program will also directly benefit from funds raised by the luncheon. Our total contribution for this event was $15K!
